What is your favorite shooting range?

I’m curious to hear about everyone’s favorite shooting ranges. Do you prefer indoor or outdoor? What about the vibe or the staff? Share your thoughts!

I only shoot outdoors, usually at the ISRA range or my silhouette range in Knox IN. I refuse to shoot indoors. Too loud, too much concussion, and short range. I like easy going range members and if there are range officers present, mild mannered ones! Lol

The Tac Shack, in Peoria, IL has a small (6 lane) but nice indoor range. My own preference is outdoor ranges, for that I joined Chillicothe Sportsmans Club. They have a large number of outdoor ranges, including archery ranges, and skeet and trap ranges. Rifle range 1 goes out to 300 yards. Membership applications are accepted from December through May.

I live in Zion. I like the range at 5 Star in Zion. Sixteen 25-yard lanes with nice and easy to operate target trolleys. Good ventilation and not cold in the winter. For outdoor rifle, I like McMiller Sports Center in Eagle, WI. I haven't been up there in a couple years and I know they remodeled their range. Used to have 8 or 10 lanes where you could hang a target at either 100, 200 or 300 yards. They had a pair of golf carts to speed target change out during the cease-fire times. I think they separated the rifle ranges into a singe distance for each range. $35 for all day with access to every range isn't a bad deal. Military/First Responder discount offered as well.

When I was a young pup, one of my life goals was to own a piece of property where I could target shoot from my patio. I now live in unincorporated St Anne, IL and have that now. I have a +100yd rifle range where I can set up on the patio. It has a creek bed for a backstop. There’s a 40 yd pistol range on the other side of the property with 150 yards of dense trees behind it as a backstop. I have been to a formal range only twice and I much prefer the solitude and flexibility of my own range.

There's a 40 yd pistol range on the other side of the property with 150 yards of dense trees behind it as a backstop. I have been to a formal range only twice and I much prefer the solitude and flexibility of my own range.

I knew we were going to inherit land in Texas when my wife's parents passed away and it has always been our plan to build on that land. I was looking forward to being able to shoot a pistol out back behind the house. Fast forward to us building our house and the land is now inside city limits and no longer can one shoot firearms there. Once I move down there I'll have to find a range.

I was lucky for many years, I belonged to a private "key club" outdoor range with target butts at 10 yards, 25 yards, and 100 yards. Covered firing line, 5 benchrests, and seldom were there more than 1or 2 other's there, Range was 10 minutes from my house. But, the original owner passed away a couple years ago, and a son-in-law took over. He did enhance things for a time then this year shut it down, "Too much liability" was his reasoning. I now have to travel 35 miles (each way) to get to my other range. I do have a trap & skeet range just 5 miles away, which I use every week.

I only shoot handguns, and belong to the Pine Tree Pistol Club in Rockford. The club has an indoor range (actually three separate ranges) in the heated building and members can come anytime. Most of the time that I go I am the only person in the building. Its open to the public on several Sundays a month. The maximum shooting distance is 25 yards, but for me that is more than enough.

I had 40 acres in Western Illinois for 20 years with deep draws for backstops.I had a great range with target stands as well as gongs.I had to sell it due to my wifes Alzheimers diagnosis.Found some guys that hunt and shoot near Henry Illinois with 150 acres and a nice shooting range so I hunt and shoot with them now.

Fox Valley in Elgin for pistols or setting up a fresh scoped rifle. Indoor.
Sycamore Sportsmans club for fine tuning scoped guns and load testing. 100yd, 50 yard, 25 yard and 25 foot pistol is what the range consists of. outdoors with a roof over top. They also have Trap and skeet. $15 for the rifle/pistol range for non members. it was 4 dollars a round non member 15 years ago when we used to shoot clays there. no clue what it is now.
McMiller in wisconsin for shooting 200 and 300 yards. Price is right and well worth the drive for a days work up there.

Bristol Wisconsin/ Kenosha County Conservation Club used to be my go to before I found out about McMiller. you can shoot 200 yards and 100 yards from the same bench and I believe its 40 bucks for the day non members. They do have an enclosed area but I've never shot there as I'm mainly shooting Muzzleloaders.. they do have a lot to offer there too.

Ive been a member at Kenosha County Conservation Club for 30yrs. Great ranges and you can shoot to 200yds. I do want to try McMiller even though it is rather far away. I understand they have a 300yd bench. I feel I need to try that out.

Belong to two clubs NIRPC outside west Rockford, and Rock Run Longrifles also west of Rockford. Both have excellent ranges

Downers Grove Sportsmen’s Club just west of Morris for Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. ISRA for everything else.

I've been a KCCC (Bristol) member since the late 1970s. Shoot there most Tuesday mornings. Guys get together shortly after 7:00 AM, do range maintenance, open the range for themselves at 9:00 and shoot at least until 10:00 AM. Special bonus is that range maintenance officers get free membership. BUT, you may already be one of us! I live in Libertyville.

30 years is quite a stretch! How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

I joined in the early 90s probably 1993 at the latest. I'm comfortably north of 60.

I shot trap there many years ago but just on occasion, not regularly. Now just the rifle and pistol range. I reload my rifle ammo so that's the main reason I go there.
