What my chronograph told me about my "premium" factory ammo

It was advertised at 1,150 fps but chronographed at 1,020 from my barrel. That's not a complaint about the ammo, it's a reminder that advertised velocity is from a test barrel, not your barrel. Know your actual numbers when it matters, especially for defensive loads where you're depending on expansion at a certain velocity threshold.

That “premium” label hits you differently after you run your rounds through a chrono. There’s nothing quite like realizing your claimed numbers are a fantasy compared to what your gun actually does.

I finally obtained a chrono last year after decades of reloading. It confirmed several of my latest hunting loads. What was more interesting was the factory loads through different handguns. Some loads were consistent with published velocities, some not so much.

yeah, factory specs are test barrel numbers, your real-world velocity can vary a lot, so it’s smart to verify.

My chrono had the audacity to tell me my carry load was running 95fps slower than the box claimed. I am not mad, just humbled. Test your stuff before you need your stuff.

I tested my carry load once and it ran 88fps below spec...Eye-opening moment for me. So yeah, those advertised numbers are just marketing until your barrel says otherwise, especially when it counts.
