Planning a trip to visit some family and thinking about the best route. I want to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State complicates things a lot. Avoiding NY adds a ton of extra drive time, and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it. I've heard mixed things about transporting firearms through different states, and I'm curious if anyone's been in this situation and how you handled it. I'm open to suggestions, even if it doesn't have to be perfect. Any tips would help.

Here is the Federal Law that is supposed to protect travelers with Firearms. 18 US Code 926A. The short version is if you can posses the gun legally where you live and can posses it legally at the location of the end of your trip than you must keep the gun unloaded and inaccessible. You would need to read the entire law to be accurate.

As for personal experience, in my younger years I just never paid attention to other state's law. It was a given by many police officers that out of state travelers get a pass. Now I don't trust them. Authoritarianism seems to have soaked into the core of a lot of them, especially the young ones. Discretion seems missing in many of them. They only follow orders.

I suggest you read New York law. There are several CCW websites you may visit that carry knowledge about all the states you visit. You may find some personal experiences there too.

Hope this helps.

In the vehemently anti-gun states it seems that they use whatever loopholes they can use to infringe upon this federal law. If you are passing through states like NY or NJ I encourage you to not only have the gun unloaded and not accessible, but to store the ammunition apart from the gun and most importantly, do not stop for anything while crossing the state. Even stopping for gas, or a restroom could subject you to a felony arrest. Just my opinion.
