I still see tons of carbine gas rifles that are still going strong after years of use. They can be a bit jumpy, but I've never had any problems with them being unreliable.
I see it as a use-case thing. Carbines work fine, no question but mid-length gas systems feel smoother in my hands. If I was starting fresh, I’d probably go that way.
