Opening Day of Dove Season

Anyone else headed out for doves today? Fortunately the opening day falls on a holiday this year, so I have the day off to go with my neighbor to his private dove field, which he and some others neighbors own, where they plant sunflowers each year. We took a drive over yesterday around 3:00 and it was packed with birds. I look at dove season like a pre-cursor to deer season. I enjoy it, and we go out a few times before deer season. When October 1st hits, I am in a totally different mind set for the next three and half months.

Sunflower fields are gold for doves, set up near a water source for better action. Use a 12-gauge with 8 shot, and aim just ahead of their flight path.

How did you make out with Doves yesterday?

Opening day we only got 6, yesterday afternoon we got 10. It really all depends on how many guys are out there with my neighbor and I and which direction the doves are flying in from. Some of the guys are dove snipers and if they come in from their direction no chance for my neighbor and I. That was what happened on opening day, and for about an hour and a half yesterday afternoon. We had the field to ourselves after 5:30 and then we started to see plenty of action. We will go at least a couple more times before deer season begins. Gotta let things settle down for a week or so.
