Been thinking about building my first AR-15 and finally dove into looking at parts. It's overwhelming, honestly. There are a lot of options out there, and I'm not sure what parts are actually worth it. I'm settling on a basic rifle build and probably going with 5.56 for starters, but I'm open to any suggestions if you think there's a better choice.

I'm curious if there are specific brands that I should steer clear of. I'm sure there are hidden costs I'm not even aware of yet — like tools or specific accessories. I also wonder if there are rookie mistakes you guys made that I should definitely avoid.

Is it better to just buy one that's already assembled? Or is the build experience worth it? I'd love to hear about any frustrating experiences or valuable lessons you've had along the way. Thanks!

This is why I hopped the border.

I prefer to build versus buy myself. After that it all comes down to the price point you have in mind. For me it's BCM if you want to spend more, PSA if you want to spend less. But there are many other good brands out there and a few bad. Myself, I would avoid anderson, bear creek, radical, and olympic. Have read about and seen a lot of issues with those brands.
